Holding the Light

B.E. Boykin

Gather up whatever is glittering in the gutter,

whatever has tumbled in the waves or fallen

in flames out of the sky, for it’s not only our

hearts that are broken, but the heart of the world as well.

Stitch it back together.

Make a place where the day speaks to the night

and the earth speaks to the sky.

Whether we created God or God created us

it all comes down to this:

In our imperfect world

we are meant to repair and stitch together what beauty there is,

stitch it with compassion and wire.

See how everything we have made gathers

the light inside itself and overflows?

A blessing.

Farewell, My Joy

Charles Villiers Stanford

Farewell, my joy!

For other hearts the Spring,

For other eyes the roses; but for me

The iron gate, the shadowy cypress-tree,

The solemn dirge that cloistered voices sing.

Farewell, my joy!

Alas, I loved thee well!

For no light matter had I let thee go.

I cherished thee in rain, and wind, and snow.

I bound thee to my breast with many a spell.

Hail and farewell, my joy!

If I might give

To one sweet friend the rapture that I miss,

Read in her eyes that ecstasy of bliss,

Tho' death were in my own,

I yet should live.

Crossing the Bar

Rani Arbo, arr. Peter Amidon

Sunset and evening star

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar

When I put out to sea

But such a tide as moving seems asleep

Too full for sound and foam

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell

And after that dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell

When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of

Time and Place

The flood may bear me far

I hope to see my Pilot face

When I have crossed the bar.

Hide and Seek

Imogen Heap, arr. Jan Yngwe

Where are we?

What the hell is going on?

The dust has only just begun to fall

Crop circles in the carpet

Sinking feeling

Spin me 'round again and rub my eyes

This can't be happening

When busy streets amass with people

Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek

Trains and sewing machines

All those years

They were here first

Oily marks appear on walls

Where pleasure moments hung before

The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this

Still life

Hide and seek

Trains and sewing machines

Oh, you won't catch me around here

Blood and tears, hearts

They were here first

Mm, what’d you say?

Mm, that you only meant well?

Well, of course you did.

Mm, what’d you say?

Mm, that it’s all for the best?

Of course it is.

Mm, what’d you say?

Mm, that it’s just what we need?

You decided this.

Mm, what’d you say?

Mm, what did she say?

Ransom notes keep fallin’ out your mouth

Mid-sweet talk, newspaper work cut-outs.

Speak no feeling, no I don’t believe you.

You don’t care a bit. You don’t care a bit.

You Do Not Walk Alone

Elaine Hagenberg

May you see God’s light on the path ahead

When the road you walk is dark.

May you always hear,

Even in your hour of sorrow,

The gentle singing of the lark.

When times are hard may hardness

Never turn your heart to stone,

May you always remember when the shadows fall

You do not walk alone.

Walk Together, Children

Moses Hogan

There’s a great camp-meetin’

There’s a great camp-meetin’

Lawd, a great camp-meetin’ in the promised lan’

Oh, walk together children, don’t you get weary,

Walk together children, don’t you get weary,

Walk together children don’t you get weary,

There’s a great camp-meetin’ in the promised lan’

Gonna walk and never tire,

Oh walk and never tire

Walk and never tire

There’s a great camp-meetin’ in the promised lan’

Gonna sing and never tire,

Oh sing and never tire

sing and never tire

Gonna shout and never tire,

Oh shout and never tire

shout and never tire

There’s a great camp-meetin’ in the promised lan’

Oh, walk together children, don’t you get weary

Sing together children, don’t you get weary

shout together children, don’t you get weary

There’s a great camp-meetin’ in the promised lan’.

When the Earth Stands Still

Don Macdonald

Come listen in the silence of the

moment before rain comes down.

There’s a deep sigh in the quiet

of the forest and the tall tree’s crown.

Now hold me.

Will you take the time to

hold me and embrace the chill?

Or miss me,

will you take the time to miss me

when the earth stands still?

Cause there’s no use running

cause the storm’s still coming

and you’ve been running for so many years.

Come listen in the silence of the

moment before shadows fall.

Feel the tremor of your heartbeat

matching heartbeat as we both dissolve.

Now hold me….

Cause there’s no use running

cause the storm’s still coming

and you’ve been running for so many years.

So stay with me, held in my arms

Like branches of a tree

They’ll shelter you for many years.

Poem of Praise

Florence B. Price

Swift things are beautiful:

Swallows and deer,

And lightning that falls

Bright-veined and clear,

Rivers and meteors,

Wind in the wheat,

The strong-withered horse,

The runner’s sure feet.

And slow things are beautiful:

The closing of day,

The pause of the wave

That curves downward to spray,

The ember that crumbles,

The opening flower,

And the ox that moves on

In the quiet of power.

All Will Be Well

Will Todd

There's a bloom that never fades,

there's a dream that stays

There's a hope which carries me

through all my days

So I will bring a shining light,

a story new to tell

In the end all things shall pass

and all will be well

I am here beside you,

I am holding you

I will be the hand of love in all you do

So I will bring a shining light,

a story new to tell

In the end all things shall pass

and all will be well

Caledonia

Dougie MacLean, arr. Blake Morgan

I don't know if you can see

the changes that have come over me

In these last few days, I've been afraid

that I might drift away

So I've been telling old stories, singing songs

that make me think about where I came from

And that's the reason why I seem so far away today

But let me tell you that I love you,

that I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you're calling me,

and now I'm going home

But if I should become a stranger,

you know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

I have moved and I've kept on moving,

proved the points that I needed proving

Lost the friends that I needed losing,

found others on the way

I have kissed the ladies

and left them crying,

stolen dreams, yes there's no denying

I have travelled hard,

sometimes with conscience lying

somewhere with the wind

But let me tell you that I love you,

that I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you're calling me,

and now I'm going home

But if I should become a stranger,

you know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

Now I'm sitting here before the fire,

the empty room, the forest choir

The flames that couldn't get any higher,

well they've withered, now they've gone

But I'm steady thinking,

my way is clear

and I know what I will do tomorrow

When the hands have shaken

and the kisses flow,

well I will disappear

But let me tell you that I love you,

that I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you're calling me,

and now I'm going home

But if I should become a stranger,

you know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

I Am Loved

from “Poems of Sara Teasdale”

Christopher H. Harris

I am wild, I will sing to the trees,

I will sing to the stars in the sky,

I love, I am loved, he is mine,

Now at last I can die!

I am sandaled with wind and with flame,

I have heart-fire and singing to give,

I can tread on the grass or the stars,

Now at last I can live!
